This precast concrete Glycol storage tank was installed at the Greater Buffalo International Airport. The 200,000 gallon watertight structure is comprised of four rows of eight – 30 ton precast segments, creating an approximate 70′ square footprint. Through the use of the new patent pending “Kon-Seal” tank sealing system, precast concrete was found to be an extremely efficient solution.

Kistner Concrete Products, Inc. utilized a “valued engineer change proposal” in order to provide the contractor with the alternate design. Through a partnering effort with the owner, NFTA, and the consulting engineer, C & S Engineers; final VECP design was agreed upon. The result of this venture became a net savings of $200,000.00.

Production of all 32 twelve foot square segments took place in 27 days at Kistner Concrete’s Lockport, NY manufacturing facility.

Due to severe FAA working constraints and a tank location at the end of a main runway, installation occurred from 12:00 midnight to 6:00 a.m. during runway shutdown. The three night installation of the 32 segments went “smoothly and efficiently.”

The entire tank was subsequently backfilled using control density fill concrete ballast between each section.
